Give Me a Break

The Switzer family just returned from a two week Christmas break in California! It was nice to be able to take a break from the frigid conditions of Provo to enjoy some time with family. However, as we look through pictures, we realize that we didn't document our journey that well, probably because so many pictures were being taken of our Kaylee and us, that we didn't feel the need to take many pictures ourselves! Maybe we'll get our hands on some more of the pictures later, but we still have a good amount to chronicle our journey.

Our wonderful car took us to many places this trip, and got more traveling in it these last two weeks than it has probably ever had since we've owned it! The Friday night before Christmas we left Provo and the roads were not of the best conditions... we only made it about 4 hours on the road before we decided it was best to probably wait out the storms and try again driving in the morning. The next day we made it to Matt and Melissa's new house and spent the night at their new house (8 hour drive). It was fun to be able to spend some time in Rocklin, because that is where we would like to end up, eventually.

The next day we made the rest of the two hour trip to Joel's parent's house in San Leandro. Since Joel's sisters were going to be spending Christmas Day with their husband's families, we had a little Christmas with each other. It was fun to see everyone give their gifts and it was fun to open up presents too! After a few days in San Leandro, we left on Tuesday for Bishop California where Joel's extended family was meeting to have Christmas together (another 8+ hour drive). We took our car and had Joel's parents drive with us because our car has all-wheel drive. Through (again) bad conditions, we made it safely and enjoyed spending Christmas with Joel's parents and his extended family. It was the first time GG (Great Grandma Burns) got to meet Kaylee, that was something special that we were very much looking forward to. Kaylee was so passed around, that we were constantly wondering who had our baby! Kaylee was such a good baby for everyone, and she was the hit of Christmas.
We made it back to the Bay Area, taking a bit of a dryer/safer/longer route... (another 9 hour drive) and had a few more days to spend with Joel's parents. We also got to go to the Emerald Bowl and watch Cal beat Miami in San Francisco. It was a fun and different experience for Rachelle, as she has not spent much time in San Francisco, and even got her first ride on BART.

We also got to go to the Jelly Belly factory on Tuesday, and that was a lot of fun to go to the factory. It was the first time Rachelle had been to the factory, and the first time Joel has been when it was fully operational. Aside waiting in the long line to get in, it was fun to go with Joel's sisters and their families to the factory. It was the first time they could remember being together with their families without Mom and Dad! We hope that these sort of things keep happening over the years, and that we remain close.
We spent the last days of our break, including New Year's Day up again in Rocklin (3 hour drive). It was a good New Year's Eve, again we spent time with Joel's sister and their families. The kids were able to celebrate the new year at 9:00 P.M. along with New York. After the kids went to bed we played some games, did the countdown (Pacific Time), and had some Martinelli's to celebrate.

The rest of the week was spent going around Rocklin and Sacramento seeing the sites and a lot of the new developments that Melissa has been scoping out for us when we move out there. We also spent some time in Old Sac, had yummy carmel apples, and looked at the trains.
We left Saturday afternoon to get back to Utah, 12.5 hours later we were home, and cold, and tired! It has been a long trip with about 48 hours in the car total... Kaylee was such a good baby, and was a champ in her car seat. It was so good to be with family over the holidays, and was worth the hours in the car, for sure.
