Sleep Training: Day 1

At our 4 month appointment with Kaylee, our pediatrician told us about sleep training.  There are so many opinions when it comes to babies and sleep, but what she explained made sense to us.  She said, by 4 months, babies understand that if you don't come in when they cry, they can soothe themselves.  Too much before that, they don't understand and will just keep crying night after night.  So, we tried it with Kaylee.  She cried for 1 hr and 45 agonizing minutes, but every night after that she slept for 9-11 hours straight.  It was a rough night, but so worth it for all of us to be able to get better sleep from then on.

Enter Sienna.
We've kept putting it off.  At 4 months, she was pretty congested so we decided to wait a week.  Then when we would decide it was time, she would sleep 10 hours on her own.  In the past three days, the first night she probably woke up 4 or 5 times, the next night slept 9 hours, and so I decided last night could be the night to begin.

She went to bed around 8:30 and started crying around 2:35 AM.  She stopped just 30 minutes later and it wasn't nearly as bad as Kaylee's sleep training cry.  She woke again about an hour later, cried for 5 minutes, and went back to sleep.  We will see how tonight goes.

Just after Sienna fell asleep again, Kaylee started crying to let me know she had been woken up.  Since I was wide awake, I let her come hang out with me for a little while before heading back to bed around 4.  Sienna woke up so happy this morning =) and Kaylee slept in until 7:30.

To be continued...

We are big proponents of sleep training too. They need to sleep and so do the parents. Even knowing that it is still agony to hear them cry. I always just want to hold them. But what relief and new sense of life comes when you can sleep through the night and so are they. Good job. So worth it.
